Adhan Background Info

Note 1: It is very hard to write out the Adhan and it can be best learned by hearing it at the masjid (mosque) or on youtube.

Note 2: You need to perform Wudu and face the Qiblah when performing the Adhan. When giving the Adhan, use the palms of both of your hands to cover both ears.

Note 3: if you hear the Adhan, you are required to repeat after the one giving the Adhan silently when they pause after each line and repeat after them with the exact same words except for steps 4 and 5.

For step 4 and 5 you need to say (a total of four times):
“Laa hhawla wala Quw-wata il-laa bil-laa hil a’aliy-yil a’dzeem”

Meaning:
“There is no power or strength except with Allah the most high and the most magnificent.”

Note 4: There is a 5.5 step that needs to be said during Fajr Adhan.
5.5 As-swalaatu khayrum-min ann-naum. x2
Prayer is better than sleep. x2

Note 5: After the Adhan is completed and it was heard by you, this dua needs to be said with your hands raised in the dua form:

Allaahumm-ma rab-ba hazehed d’awathit thaaamm-mah, waswalaathil qaaai’emah, aathi Muhammadan-nil waseelatha wal-fadweelatha, wab’as-hu maqaa manm-mahhmuuda nil-lazee wa a’athah, inn-nakalaa thuk-liful meea’aad.

Note: Will add the meaning and Arabic in the future

Iqamah

Finally, right before the start of prayer, there is something called Iqamah to announce the prayer with the Imam is starting. It is a lot similar to the adhan.

1. Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar. x1
Allah is most great, Allah is most great. x1

2. Ash-hadu Allaah ilaaha il-lal-laah. x1
I bear witness there is no god but Allah. x1

3. Ash-hadu ann-na Muhammadar rasoo-lullaah. x1
I bear witness Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. x1

4. Hhy-ya a’alas-swalaah. x1
Come to prayer. x1
Note: rotate your head slightly to the right when you say this. x1

5. Hhy-ya a’alal-falaah. x 1
Come to success.
Note: rotate your head slightly to the left when you say this. x1

6. Qad qaamathis salah. x2
Prayer has started. x2

7. Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar x1
Allah is most great, Allah is most great x1

8. Laa ilaaha il-lal-laah x1
There is no god but Allah. x1

Note: The Iqamah is fast paced because you are telling the people already gathered that prayer is starting. The adhan is slow paced and loud because it is meant to call everyone to the masjid. Again, it is best to learn from hearing in addition to reading here.
